A4: Significant Ecological Landscapes

John Hendry Park

Like many major cities, Vancouver does not have much space to incorporate large natural ecosystems. Because of this, the city focuses on preserving and maintaining the beautiful ecosystems that surround them. The mountains, forests, and marine ecosystems have a thriving biodiversity that is respected by the local community. Additionally, the urban layout of Vancouver provides many opportunities for smaller local parks and gardens to emerge. While these spaces may not be a permanent home for animals, they serve as effective corridors for migration and temporary shelters.

Green Space Planning

Coquitlam River Park Corridor

This series of parks is located west of Vancouver. It connects the Fraser River to Bruke Park and the mountains north of Vancouver. This landscape is a crucial corridor that allows animals to travel between the city without interfering with humans. Additionally, the park provides shelter and food for animals while also serving as a recreational area for people.

Marine Ecosystems

One of the largest ecological areas in Vancouver is the marine ecosystems. The entire shoreline is a diverse and rich environment that is used by many different species to feed, reproduce, and shelter. In 2011, Vancouver developed a framework for protected marine areas. Since then these protected areas have continued to be strengthened and enforced in order to ensure the protection of the ecosystem.

Still Creek

Still Creek is one of the few currently visible waterways systems left in Vancouver. This 17km stream was recently rehabilitated in hopes of revitalizing the natural ecosystem and to create a better recreational area for locals. Previously, the creek was detreating and littered with concrete and other waste. However, with the help of the neighboring communities, Still Creek has been brought back to its former glory. To highlight the success of this project, Salmon have finally returned to the Creek for the first time in over 80 years.
